The District announces its player of the week awards for September 19th

Durrell Calhoun

Northeast High School

KANSAS CITY, MO. – In only the fourth week of announcing player of the week honors, this was the most competitive as the Kansas City, Missouri School District and the Interscholastic League announced today that Durrell Calhoun of Northeast High School, Brian Townsend of Westport High School were selected co-player of the week for football while Juan Vargas of East High School, and Mohamed Awyes of Northeast High School were selected player of the week for soccer, and cross country respectively, for the week of September 19th.

“This is a good problem to have, in that there were many players who could have won, based on stats alone,” said Kimble Anders, the District’s athletic director. “The coaches voted and we had our first co-winners.”

Calhoun, a fullback, rushed for 72 yards on only seven carries and scored a touchdown, but did his damage on defense where he had seven tackles, one quarterback hurry and a forced fumble in the leading the Vikings to their second win of the season, a 45-21 win over Van Horn.

Townsend, a running back led Westport to their first win of the season, a 14-0 win over Lincoln Prep rushing for 69 yards on 23 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Blue Tigers head coach Roger Franks called Townsend, “a beast on the playing field who was hard to stop or slow down.”

Other nominees included Central’s Trayvon Gordon (255 passing yards, three touchdowns) and Xavier Herring (11 carries, 123 rushing yards).

Vargas scored seven goals as the Bears (7-1) went 2-1 last week. The District’s first two-time winner and his teammates will be honored this Saturday by the KC Wizards, during the team’s home game against the Colorado Rapid. He has scored 23 goals in eight games so far this season.

Awyes, a senior, won the Les Fields Fellowship Run on Monday with a time of 12 minutes, 46 seconds for two miles and is the first boys cross country award recipient. He placed fifth in the Swope Park Stampeded Saturday with a time 18 minutes, 25 seconds for 5K.
